We are very proud that Galilee Lutheran Chuch has scheduled a blood drive with BloodCenter of Wisconsin for August 26, 2008. This annual event commemorates former Galilee member, Bob Braunschweig, who lost his fight with leukemia 10 years ago. As you receive information on this drive, I urge you to schedule an appointment to donate. It is important that we maintain an ample blood supply in our community, and that can only be done with BloodCenter of Wisconsin, as they supply 100% of the blood to every community hospital in our area. The blood you donate will save lives right here in your community.
Patients are counting on receiving this blood to help them survive or heal. Let's all participate and make this blood drive a success for all of us. If you haven't signed up yet, please consider doing so. You'll be doing more good than you know.

A note from Parish Nurse Shirley Allison:
Every day, every 3 seconds in fact, patients in our community need blood. There are many different types of patients who need blood, for many different reasons. Blood is needed by families in accidents or fires, by mothers experiencing complications during birth, by fathers undergoing heart surgery, by children receiving chemotherapy, by premature babies with tiny lungs, by grandparents with severe anemia and by many others.
Bob Braunschweig, a longtime resident of Pewaukee, needed many units of blood products during his treatment for Myelodysplastic Syndrome – a rare type of blood cancer. Bob received a total of 111 units of whole blood and five units of platelets, which gave Bob valuable extra months of life before his last hospitalization. He lost his battle with cancer on August 25th, 1998. The Annual Community Blood Drive honors Bob, and all people who need blood donations.
For over 50 years, the BloodCenter of Wisconsin has been partnering with organizations to meet the needs of patients in our communities. Through blood collection, testing, treatment and research, the BloodCenter of Wisconsin is helping to bring hope and healing to our coworkers, neighbors, friends and families.
The donation process for blood is easy, safe and takes about an hour. A simple blood test will be performed at the time of donation to determine eligibility to donate. A driver’s license, blood donor card or government issued I.D will be required at the time of donation.
After blood is collected, it is sent to the BloodCenter of Wisconsin's labs for testing. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that all blood donations undergo a series of tests before it is given to patients. Fourteen separate tests on blood are performed, including tests for sexually transmitted diseases, West Nile virus and hepatitis. After a unit of blood passes all of the tests, it is sent to one of fifty-plus hospitals in Wisconsin which partners with the BloodCenter of Wisconsin.
All All donors must be in good health on the day of donation. To donate, you must:
· Be at least 17 years old.
· Weigh at least 110 lbs.
· Be free of major cold, flu, and allergy symptoms.
· Not have had hepatitis after age 11.
· Not have had any risk factors/behaviors associated with HIV/AIDS.
The Robert Braunschweig Community Blood Drive will be held on Tuesday, August 26th from 2:00pm to 7:00pm at Galilee Lutheran Church located at N24 W26430 Crestview Drive in Pewaukee. Make an appointment, or simply stop by. For additional information about blood donations call the BloodCenter of Wisconsin at 1-877-BE-A-HERO.
Your support is greatly appreciated!
